• Choose a note or rest duration from the palette by clicking on its icon.  (As always, you may also choose a note or rest by pressing its assigned key—see ‘Palette Quick Reference’ help for more details.) Then click in the score.  Before releasing the mouse button to “put the note down” you can change its pitch by moving the pointer up and down over the staff. Ledger lines appear when you move the pointer above or below the staff.  The note will go onto the staff where you first clicked, or as close as possible to that point.

• If “Feedback on Note Insert” is turned on in the ‘MIDI Preferences’ dialog, and a MIDI synthesizer is connected (and set to receive on the correct MIDI channel!), you’ll hear the note’s pitch change as you move it up and down.

• Pressing the Shift key while you hold the mouse button down lets you add an accidental to the note by moving the mouse up or down.  Be sure to let go of the mouse button before releasing the Shift key.

• To add an augmentation dot to a note/rest, choose the dot icon (gray note with dot AFTER it—NOT the one with the dot above!)) from the palette, then click on the note you wish to add it to.  Dots can be removed with the ‘Set Duration’ command.

• Pressing the Command (Apple) key while you hold the mouse button down will “stretch” or “shrink” the note’s duration as you drag the mouse left or right.

• To create a tuplet, select notes and/or rests already entered, then choose ‘Create Tuplet’ or ‘Fancy Tuplet’ from the Notes menu.  The latter command gives you greater control over the tuplet’s ratio and its appearance.  Remove selected tuplets with the ‘Remove Tuplet’ command.

• To create an octave sign, select notes, then choose ‘Create Octave Sign’ (Notes menu).  Restore selected notes to original octave with the ‘Remove Octave Sign’ command.
